Food Inc.

There are many of ways that I've seen the modern theme of industrialization/ mechanization manifest itself in the film.  One way is there are four slaughter houses in the U.S.A.  With only that little amount and having to feed so many people in the U.S., that's a big problem.  Another can be the chickens were stored in a small dark area.  A lot of those chickens could catch diseases because they are being held in the dark instead of being in a facility that's opened.  One other way can be they change the sizing of the meats.  For an example, on a regular chicken the breast are too small, so they enlarge them because they used that to feed more people then using the regular size.  One aspect where I can relate to the film is how so many foods recently have been showing up with salmonella poisoning in them.  I watch closely to what foods I eat because most of the food now is processed with different things in it, people can get sick from it and die, just like the little boy did.

Royal Jelly

He develops his story by introducing the problem then trying to solve the problem with a solution. He makes it real by feeding the baby royal jelly as though she is the queen bee. Dahl uses irony in the story to explain what the royal jelly can do to the baby and not other human beings. He incorporates his twist by Albert being a bee himself and drinking the jelly. Also the baby is starting to turn into a bee.

In section 1 3 romantic themes are definitions of beauty. Victor describes his wife and describes the monster beautifully yet dark. He has a lot on his mind and won't rest to finish creating his monster. For example he stays up all night. This is an example of psychological wonders. Creation is shown in Frankenstein because he is making the monster.

Kubla Khan

The setting of the poem shows Romanticism admires exotic beauty and fantastic scenery as described in the poem. Kubla Khan can have a place of romantic fantasies. For example it make is more beautiful because there was a beautiful woman singing on a mountain.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

The Mariners lifelong penance is to continue to tell his the tale as a warning against sin. You need to respect all of God's creations. It gives his listeners a better outlook on life. The larger lesson about human life is to respect nature.

The world is too much with us

The world is too much with us

The response is the poem can adapt to my life because right now pollution is making people not able to see the true beauty of earth. People aren't appreciating the earth that much.

The Umbrella Man

The plot summary is how the little old man would see people without an umbrella on a rainy day and sell them his silk umbrella for one pound.  He sold his silk umbrella that is worth 20 pounds to a woman and her daughter.  They noticed that the man was not taking a taxi to get home, so they followed him and saw that he went into a pub.  They looked through the glass window to see the old man buying a glass of whiskey with the pound note that she gave him for the umbrella.  The discussion of action is how the man had the woman feel sorry for him, because he can’t walk on his old tired leg then he walked so quickly to get to the pub. The woman noted other umbrella hanging on a rack and realized that the old man would sell the umbrellas for whiskey.  The characters are the old man who is a drunk and who sells umbrellas on rainy days to buy whiskey. The woman was is very suspicious of people and she is teaching her daughter not to trust people so quickly.  The plot twist is how the little old man took another umbrella off the coat rack and went back out into the rain to sell another umbrella to someone else.  Three literary elements are conflict because the woman is suspicious of the old man at first and then she finally trusted him because her daughter made her feel that he is an honest old man.  The irony is how the little man was not weak and tired at all, the women and her daughter could hardly keep up with him as he quickly walked to the pub.  The characterization is used in this story because the little old man was described as small, old, gentlemen, honest, polite, well-dressed, well-spoke and someone that might have a title. The rating is 4/5 because the man would sell umbrellas during rainy days in exchange for whiskey.

The Sound Machine

The plot of the story is how Klausner built a sound machine to listen to sound that humans can’t hear.  He built the machine in his shed and one day his doctor came to visit him and asked what was he doing. Klausner explained that he want to listen to a world of sound that cannot be heard like the sound of a fly. Klausner took the machine out into the garden to test it, and said that the rose made a screaming sound when his next door neighbor cut it.  He took the machine to a park and cut into a tree and heard the sound of it. The discussion of action is when Klausner wanted Dr. Scott to hear the sound of the tree, but instead the tree fell down when he struck it again with an axe.  He got angry when Dr. Scott said he did not hear anything and now the machine was broken because the tree fell on it.  The characters are Klausner who is a crazy man that wanted to listen to “Sound vibrations that are too high-pitched for reception by the human ear, and to convert them to a scale of audible tones.”  Dr. Scott is Klausner’s psychiatrist because the man is crazy. Mrs. Saunders is the next door neighbor and think that Klausner is crazy when he said the rose’s are screaming when she cut them. The plot twist is that the machine is destroyed by the tree because Klausner cut it down. The three literary elements is irony because sound machine he built was destroy by chopping down the tree, which really makes a sound anyway.  The imagery of Klausner is so crazy standing in the middle of a park with an axe in his hands forcing Dr. Scott to put iodine on the tree that he chopped down.  Foreshadowing is the sound machine that he built, he is the one that destroyed it. The rating is 3/5 because the Klausner is sick.

Man From the South

The plot summary is how the oldish little man kept trying to get the boy to bet.  The boy seems to be in Jamaica and staying at a hotel.  He went to sit in a chair next to the swimming pool and drink his beer.  A little man in a white suit was walking around the pool sat next to the boy.  They talked about the people in the pool.  When the American sailor and girl got out of the pool and sat down, he offered cigarettes to everyone, and the boy took it and held up his lighter and that is when the old man bet his Cadillac for chopping off the young boys little finger.  Discussion of action is how the boy agreed to the bet and let the old man tied his hand down to be ready for it to be chopped off because he thought his finger was not needed, and he can win a car.  The main characters are the naive young boy, the crazy old man who like chopping of people’s finger and the woman who rushed in just time to stop the boy from getting his finger chopped off.  The plot twist is that the woman who watches the old crazy man that chops off people’s finger is the person who owns the Cadillac and she had only one finger and a thumb on her hand.  She tries to save other people from what has already happened to her.  Three literary elements is irony because the woman who saved the boy owns the Cadillac and has lost her fingers to the crazy man that she now feels responsible for watching him.  The conflict is within the boy who finally convinced himself that it won’t matter to lose his finger, because it hasn’t done anything for him compared to winning a Cadillac that is not too old. Imagery that the woman of had one finger and a thumb help saved the boy’s finger from being cut off.  The rating is 3.5/5 because it makes no sense that an old man goes around chopping off people’s finger show he is a sick man.

The Hitchhiker

The plot summary is how the writer picked up a hitchhiker in his new, big BMW car that drives 129mph.  The man driving the car is a writer and whenever he see’s a hitchhiker, he picks them up because he use to be a hitchhiker. The hitchhiker bet the writer if the car can go 129mph and he proved it by driving really fast, but got stopped by a police officer on a motorcycle.  The cop gave the writer a ticket and wrote down the hitchhiker’s name and address in his book and told them both that he will see them in court. The entire time the man was driving and the hitchhiker was stealing his personal things and books from the cop. The discussion of action would be the hitchhiker showed the writer what his fantastic fingers can do and why he is a fingersmith and good at his skill trade.  The main characters are the writer, hitchhiker and the cop. The writer is very naive because by the time he figured out the hitchhiker was a pickpocket, all his personal things were stolen. The hitchhiker is very good at his job because you don’t see him or feel him stealing things.  The cop was just doing his job. The plot twist is when the hitchhiker showed the writer the books that he stolen from the cop.  The three literary elements are foreshadowing because the hitchhiker said in the beginning of the story that he has a skilled trade which meant he is very good at his job. Suspense because the writer who is really nosy wants to know what the hitchhiker does for a living, even after he knows that the hitchhiker is stealing his things. The irony is the writer got away with speeding because the man was a fingersmith.  The is rating 4.5.5 because the irony of the story is funny, the writer got to driver the top speed of his new car without getting into trouble and a ticket from speeding.

Roald Dahl was one of the greatest story-tellers of all time. He was born in Llanduff, South Wales, of Norwegian parents, in 1916, and educated in English boarding-schools. Then, in search of adventure, the young Dahl took a job with Shell Oil in Africa. When World War II broke out he joined the RAF as a fighter pilot, receiving terrible injuries and almost dying in a plane crash in 1942.
It was following this “monumental bash on the head” and a meeting with C. S. Forester (author of the famous Captain Horatio Hornblower stories) that Roald Dahl's writing career began, with articles for magazines such as The New Yorker. He wrote successful novellas and short stories for adults, such asTales of the Unexpected, before concentrating on his marvelous children's stories. The first of these, James and the Giant Peach, in 1960, was followed by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and an unbroken string of hugely successful, best-selling titles.
Roald Dahl worked from a tiny hut in the pale orchard of the Georgian house in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire which he shared with his wife, Liccy. He was always brimming with new ideas and his many books continue to bring enormous enjoyment to millions of children and their parents throughout the world.
Roald Dahl died on November 23, 1990.

Genesis and Catastrophe

The plot summary is how Klara was afraid that her new born child will die. She explained to the doctor that three of her children had already died at young ages. Throughout her conversation with the doctor, he explained that her new child is normal. Then the mother asked if the child was small. The doctor said a little small and asked what is the name of the child.  When the husband came he was annoyed that his new son was smaller than Otto, who was small and weak and died. Discussion of action is how the doctor immediately told the husband that nothing was wrong with the new child and he was just born.  Klara is the main character that was very protective of her children, but is scared that her new child will die because of what happened in the past.  Alois is the husband, who is a drunk and has no affection. He is annoyed that all of his children are small and weak. The doctor is a caring man that is trying to comfort Klara.  The plot twist is that her fourth child that lived is Adolf Hitler.  Three literary elements is foreshadowing, the baby that lived was Adolfus Hitler, which later was the cause of a disaster. The irony is that Adolf was smaller than the other children, but lived to grow up and kill other people. The symbol is that Klara prayed for mercy that Adolf would live and he became a powerful man that was responsible for many deaths. The rating is 4.5/5 because of the symbolic message when the doctor said, “The small ones are often a lot tougher than the big ones.”

Lamb to the Slaughter

The plot summary is how Mary Maloney would wait patiently every night for her husband to come home from work.  She was six months pregnant and loved her husband very much and would cater to him as soon as he entered the house.  One night, Patrick had a four or five minute conversation with his wife.  It seems that he was leaving her, but offer to give her money and see that she was looked after and there was no need to make a fuss, because it was not good for his job.  Mary got a leg of lamb from the freezer to start supper, but struck Patrick over the head with meat and killed him. She went to the grocer and spoke to Sam to have an alibi.  Patrick’s coworkers investigated the crime scene and was looking for the murder weapon which was cooking in the oven.  Discussion of action is how Mary is preparing the supper to get away with this crime, which I think she a smart character. Mary Maloney is the main character and is a pregnant housewife that snapped and murder him in a state of shock, but planned the perfect cover up.  She is calm and smart character.  Patrick Maloney seems to be a cold and unaffectionate person, after telling his wife, he just want to go out and showed no concern for her feelings. Sergeant Jack Noonon is the detective in the murder case seems to be easily tricked by the victim’s wife, because he knows her. The plot twist is that murder weapon which the detectives had a feeling was on the premises, but they were eating it for supper. Three literary terms are imagery which is the leg of lamb. The irony is that the hunger detectives did not even suspect the murder weapon cooking in the oven, which the smelled it instead of seeing it.  Foreshadowing is how Mary kept wanting to make supper and the supper is what helped her get away with the murder. If her husband stayed for supper he may have been alive.  The rating is 4.5/5 because the plot twist is a mystery and funny and how his housewife fooled the detectives.
