The Umbrella Man

The plot summary is how the little old man would see people without an umbrella on a rainy day and sell them his silk umbrella for one pound.  He sold his silk umbrella that is worth 20 pounds to a woman and her daughter.  They noticed that the man was not taking a taxi to get home, so they followed him and saw that he went into a pub.  They looked through the glass window to see the old man buying a glass of whiskey with the pound note that she gave him for the umbrella.  The discussion of action is how the man had the woman feel sorry for him, because he can’t walk on his old tired leg then he walked so quickly to get to the pub. The woman noted other umbrella hanging on a rack and realized that the old man would sell the umbrellas for whiskey.  The characters are the old man who is a drunk and who sells umbrellas on rainy days to buy whiskey. The woman was is very suspicious of people and she is teaching her daughter not to trust people so quickly.  The plot twist is how the little old man took another umbrella off the coat rack and went back out into the rain to sell another umbrella to someone else.  Three literary elements are conflict because the woman is suspicious of the old man at first and then she finally trusted him because her daughter made her feel that he is an honest old man.  The irony is how the little man was not weak and tired at all, the women and her daughter could hardly keep up with him as he quickly walked to the pub.  The characterization is used in this story because the little old man was described as small, old, gentlemen, honest, polite, well-dressed, well-spoke and someone that might have a title. The rating is 4/5 because the man would sell umbrellas during rainy days in exchange for whiskey.
